Results and Distinctions

  • Created an entirely new class of fullerenes formed by the trimetallic nitride template (TNT) process discovered by Harry Dorn's group.
  • Pioneers in the application of ionically self-assembled monolayers (ISAM) films for optoelectronic devices.
  • 15 publications within two years, including three in Nature.
  • 12 funded research grants
  • 20 presentations, including nine invited presentations, at national professional and scientific meetings.
  • One spin-off company, which anticipates employing hundreds of people by 2002 or 2003 to produce and market these novel nanomatrials, including MRI contrast agents.

Strategic Priorities

The results of center Research and Development activities will be transferred to new nanotechnology start-up companies and will lead to job creation in Virginia.
